| Access Door or Panel |

| Acetate |
A clear plastic stretch-resistant film often supplied on rolls often used as a substrate for signs. Acetate is available in glossy and matte finishes, and can be inked. |
| Achromatic Color |
Colors with a neutral hue (equal amounts of red, green, and blue) - i.e. white, black, or gray. |
| Acid-etching |
An abrasive method primarily used on glass to etch a design into the surface. A stencil is applied to the surface and then an acidic material is applied for a specified period of time and then removed by washing. |
| Acrylic |
A type of plastic used in signs characterized by transparency and clarity, which can be painted, extruded, machined, or cast, and which can be colored to make it translucent or opaque. Acrylic is also known by trade names such as plexiglass. |
| Aesthetics |
Elements of a sign or awning such as form, color, design, or construction quality that evoke judgments about beauty, taste, or pleasure in the viewer. |
| Aluminum |
A light-weight metal commonly used for sign frames, poles, or panels, and awning frames and surfaces. Aluminum can be formed, extruded, or used in sheets. It is typically used in an alloy for strength. Aluminum is waterproof, rustproof, and resistant to chemicals. |
| Ambient Light |
The overall light level in an area. Ambient light is important when determining whether or not a sign should be lighted, and if lighted, how many lumens are required to be visible. |
| Animated Sign |
A sign with components which move mechanically or which use lights to give the impression of movement. |
| Argon |
An inert gas used in fluorescent lamps and neon tubes, which can be combined with other materials to create light in the lavender, blue, and ultra-violet ranges. |
